Belém, known as the city of mango trees, is the entrance gate to the Amazon region, with a busy port, airport and bus station, and lieing approximately 100 km upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the aromatic “Ver o Peso” market where local species of fresh fish, tropical fruits, nuts, vegetalbes, spices and herbs for sale. From there walk to the Forte do Castello built in 1616 to guard against the French. Enjoy the colonial architecture near the Praça da Repúlica and Cidade Velha section. Also worthwhile is a visit to the Museu Emílio Goeldi featuring a zoo, aquariam, and archeological exhibits.
